When Trauma Becomes a Weapon
He comes in out of the tunnel with soot on his face and a grin on it: "Worked like a charm, Meridia… The precious Zenithian Hall's probably still burnin' hotter than Solara's pyre as we speak." Dominic and Jay set the bombs that tore open Lucien's temple mid-sermon — the blast that, without either of them knowing it, gave Mira Roehart the chaos she needed to run. When he learns who the girl in white robes is, the grin goes out like a lamp.
"We can't trust her. We can't. She needs to be sent back out. Now… We don't owe her a godsdamn thing!" He loses the argument to Meridia's colder arithmetic, and hates that she is right. The next day he is back with a hooded Zenithian slung between him and Jay, wrenching the man's arms behind his back "quick and sure as a deckhand tying off a line. He had done this before."
What follows makes him the title of Chapter 24. When Meridia's reason fails against the captive's scripture, she nods, and Dominic steps into "the space she vacated with aggressive certainty" — first the soft voice, "Hey, friend," then the roar that brings the Forsaken to their feet, then the fists. He wants fear and repentance and gets a low, wet chuckle instead. He cannot stop. It is Mira's void that stops him.
The Heart That Chose Violence Over Vulnerability
Dominic is not the sanctuary's suspicious old guard — that is Gerald, "grizzled" and spitting. Dominic is young, quick, and burning. His speech in the cavern is not an interrogation; it is a confession with a stranger's face for a target.
Instruments of Rage and Protection
Dominic has no magic. He has bombs, rope, a knife on his belt, and a voice that turns a cavern of the cast-out into a mob.
The Fists: "A brutal right hook that connected with the captive's jaw in a sickening crunch" — and again, and harder
The Knife: He slashes the ropes lashing the captive to the chair "loose enough to lift, and no more than that"
Thrown Back: Mira's pulse of void hurls him backward "as if struck by an invisible fist"
The Capture: Leaves before false dawn and returns with a hooded Zenithian in torn white-and-gold (Ch. 24)
Deckhand's Knots: Wrenches the captive's arms behind him "quick and sure as a deckhand tying off a line" — an old skill from a life before
Escapes: "Runnin' for our lives," Jay says of their flight from the Chosen after the blast
The Roar: "He's disruptin' the godsdamn balance of this world, you blind fool!"
The Verdict: "Thank you for the privilege of losing everything."
The Failure: "He had wanted fear. Repentance. The sweet collapse of a Chosen brought low. And the bound man simply would not give it to him."
Poof: "One wrong step, one whispered doubt, one godsdamn mistake… Poof. Gone. Just like that."
The Cavern Answers: "Tell 'em, Dominic!" "Enough is enough!" — "years of pain and rage given voice at last"
Cost: Mira, watching, sees "no justice left in this. Only cruelty: the very tyranny they despised, with the whip changing hands"

Dominic's people are the Forsaken; his partner is Jay; his commander is Meridia; and his newest problem wears white robes.
The Price of Righteous Fury
Dominic is the Forsaken's fire. He is the first face of the resistance Mira sees clearly — soot-streaked and grinning over a burning Hall — and the first she sees turn ugly, a day later, over a man tied to a chair. In between, he is the only person in the sanctuary who says out loud what most of them are thinking: that Lucien Altheris' wife is a danger, and that they owe her nothing.
His long speech in Chapter 24 is the closest thing the public chapters give to a creed for the Forsaken. Lucien "just wants you to worship him. Like he's Zenith himself." The Chosen are "wolves in sheep's clothin'" who promise home and family and take both away for a single whispered doubt. And then the line that names the chapter, torn out of him "thick with something ruined": Thank you for the privilege of losing everything.
The book does not let the speech excuse the fists. The captive will not break; the cheering curdles; Dominic keeps hitting; and it is Mira, of all people — the newcomer he wanted thrown back to the wolves — who steps between them and says the one word he cannot. He is thrown back by wings of void, and the sanctuary sees what she is.
Who Dominic was before the brand, and what the fight costs him after Chapter 24, are matters for the rest of The Forsaken. The public pages leave him where the void left him: on the stone, staring at a girl in white who has just done what he could not, and lifted a Zenithian's fog without a single blow.
