Have you ever had a soul connection with a pet before?
I was 16 years old when I had recently been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility for severe anxiety attacks and depression. At the time, I was living with my grandpa, and every morning he would give me my medication. The rest of the time, he kept it hidden so I wouldn’t swallow it all at once and try to end my misery.
My grandma begged him to let me get a pet of my own so I wouldn’t feel so lonely. So I would have something to love. Something to stay for.
My grandpa finally agreed…
under one condition.
It had to be a Siamese cat.
So I scoured the internet forums until one day, I found him.
He was white and red with the most beautiful blue eyes I had ever seen, and before I ever held him, before I ever brought him home, something in my heart already knew.
He was mine.
I named him Mosif, but everyone knew him as Mo.
And that cat saved my life.
More than once.
One thing I will never forget is how he made sure I went to bed. He would wait for me to lie down, then plop his massive frame against my back like he knew exactly what I needed. Because he did. Somehow, he just knew.
That pressure against me gave me more relief than any pill ever could. For a long time, it was the only way I could sleep. And if I woke up and Mo wasn’t there, all I had to do was call his name.
He would come back, press himself against me again, and stay there until I was sound asleep.
I loved that cat more than I loved most people.
He was so special to me. We understood each other in a way I don’t know how to explain without sounding a little crazy, but maybe people who have loved an animal like that will understand.
It really was just a girl and her cat against the world.
It has been six years since his soul passed on, and I truly thought I would never love another animal the way I loved Mo.
Until Milo.
