Rivenglade

Where Ancient Whispers Meet Divine Light

Nestled between the Azure Expanse and ancient woodlands, south of Atheria and west across the water from Sommer Isle, this coastal forest town of timbered, thatch-roofed houses has become the crucible where old traditions clash with Zenith's growing influence. Five years after the Silence dropped its curtain on the world, refugees from ruined Solara and battered Atheria washed onto its worn piers in an unending tide, and into that crowd of the weary and lost came Lucien Altheris, robed in white and gold, speaking not of gods but of God. Once peaceful cobblestone streets now pulse with the tension of transformation, as the Wild Gods' whispers—woven into the very fabric of Rivenglade, their breath in the wind through the pines, their moods mirrored in the sea—compete with the certainty of divine light. It is the home of Mira Roehart, whose story The Chosen tells.

The Great Transformation

A tale of two Rivenglades—the peaceful village that was, and the controlled community it has become under Zenith's ever-watchful light

The Village That Was

Rural Tranquility & Ancient Harmony

In those gentler times, narrow cobblestone streets echoed with the lonely cries of gulls and the comforting murmur of neighborly greetings. Vendors' calls lilted unhurried through morning mist, while the rhythmic clang of craftsmen's hammers provided a steady heartbeat to village life, and the sea sang its timeless ballad of tides and salt-laced wind against the groan of ancient piers.

The people maintained a utilitarian but respectful bond with the encroaching forests, fishing the coast and hunting, logging and gathering in the woods—viewing the ancient woodlands as resources to be managed wisely rather than the sacred entities the Dawnseekers hold them to be. Traditional devotion flowed in nature-revering practices passed down through generations: tales whispered around hearth fires, sung in lullabies and painted in folklore, of woodland spirits, sea deities and ancient powers that predated the realm's foundations—the Wild Gods, respected, perhaps appeased, but never dismissed.

Under Light's Dominion

Divine Order & Subtle Oppression

Now those same streets pulse with unfamiliar vitality—a feverish energy thrumming beneath placid surfaces. Vendors' calls that once clamored in desperate pitches have hushed into earnest affirmations of Zenith's supremacy, while craftsmen's hammers beat with deliberate, reverent rhythm, incorporating stark Zenithian symbols into everyday creations.

Outwardly normal yet permeated by growing unease, the town hosts both longtime residents and refugee populations seeking sanctuary—soot-stained Solarians and bone-weary Atherians whose crowded inns and overflowing stalls of salvaged treasures lend an illusion of prosperity. Prayers drift from hastily repurposed buildings turned makeshift sanctuaries; faces once etched with hard-earned laughter wear a disconcerting serenity, a calm bordering on vacant. Beneath surface unity lies subtle social tension, all watched by ever-present eyes that measure faith and compliance.

The Zenithian Hall

Heart of divine authority where faith and fear intertwine beneath suffocating light

Sacred Center of Control

A hastily erected yet imposing religious edifice thick with burning incense and divine authority. Sunlight filters through rough-spun white cloths, casting stark, unforgiving illumination across rigid wooden benches and a raised marble altar adorned with pristine white lilies.

Golden braziers line the aisles like silent sentinels, their suffocating fragrance mingling with the weight of watchful eyes. White banners embroidered with Zenith's sigil hang from towering pillars, golden light pours through high skylights onto polished marble, and heavy oak doors groan open for the condemned. Here Lucien preaches Zenith's imminent reign, here the Chosen are baptised upon the altar, and here the Forsaken are stripped of their robes and cast out. In the last hours of The Chosen a blast of fire and smoke erupted from the Hall's side wall—set, as The Forsaken reveals in its opening chapter, by bombs of the outcasts hiding beneath the woods. The atmosphere itself seems carefully constructed to inspire equal measures of awe and submission among the faithful congregation.

Hidden Sanctuaries

Ancient places where old powers linger and Wild God whispers resist the encroaching light

Ancient Stone Monuments

Deep within the forests surrounding Rivenglade lie ancient stone monuments, weathered by countless seasons and shrouded in moss. These silent sentinels bear strange symbols that pulse faintly with residual magic—remnants of pre-Silence power that even Zenith's Light cannot fully extinguish. One massive stone juts from the earth like the weathered tooth of some long-dead titan, half-buried in mossy soil with strange, indecipherable symbols carved deep into its surface, pulsing faintly as if they dimly remembered an old magic now fading—a focal point where the Wild Gods' presence can still be faintly felt by those who know how to listen, and where, the story goes, a weeping girl was once answered by a Nimwe and left with a silver feather.

The Whispering Falls

Deep in the hushed, ancient heart of the forest, beyond the familiar paths, lies a hidden oasis concealed behind a towering wall of tangled vines: the Whispering Falls. A waterfall tumbles like a silver ribbon down a craggy cliff face of dark, moss-covered stone into a deep, shadowed pool whose surface shimmers like scattered glass, while mist curls lazily around a massive boulder at the pool's edge—a silent sentinel guarding the sanctuary. The air hangs thick with the primal scents of moss, damp earth and the crisp spray of the falls—a sensory balm untainted by the perfume of Zenithian incense. Two Rivenglade girls who had lived there all their lives found it only in the days after Lucien came; the folklore they traded there says nymphs still watch over such hidden pools and dryads whisper secrets through the ancient trees.

The Pulse of Daily Life

How existence flows under the watchful eyes of Zenith's faithful

The Marketplace

The town center pulses with subdued energy, where merchants and craftsmen conduct trade under the ever-present watch of Zenith's faithful. Traditional commerce adapts to new religious expectations, creating subtle tensions beneath surface civility.

Coastal Livelihood

Fishing vessels return with the day's catch to weathered, moss-softened piers while the salty tang of the Azure Expanse mingles with pine and damp earth. The ocean provides both sustenance and trade connections to Atheria, whose fishing culture is a point of kinship, and it is by sea that the refugees of the Silence arrive.

Forest Utilization

Villagers venture into surrounding woodlands for hunting, logging, and resource gathering. Unlike the Dawnseekers' reverence, they maintain a practical relationship with the forests—valuable but manageable resources.

Refugee Integration

Migrants from ruined Solara and battered Atheria seek safety here, creating a diverse but subtly strained population that taxes resources while strengthening Zenith's Chosen through shared faith and mutual dependence. Rivenglade natives, Solarian survivors and Atherian farmers rub shoulders in a town that has become a reluctant ark groaning beneath the weight of displacement.

Religious Transformation

Traditional nature-revering beliefs give way to Zenith's absolute certainty. Lucien casts the Wild Gods aside as lesser beings or demonic deceptions and the Silence itself as divinely ordained tribulation separating the Chosen from the Forsaken; the populace, flayed raw by loss, increasingly embraces the new faith, finding comfort in divine light's promise of order and salvation.

Architectural Heritage

Timbered buildings with thatched roofs line winding cobblestone streets, reflecting generations of practical coastal forest living, and the town's tales of Solara make Rivenglade feel small and grey beside the Golden City. The rustic character persists despite growing religious influence.

The Encroaching Wilderness

Ancient woodlands stretch inland from the Azure Expanse coastline like reaching fingers of primordial memory. These forests provide both vital resources and encroaching darkness, where Beastborn lurk among shadows near the Godscarred Wastes—a prowling Virelith has been seen in the woods above the town. Deep within these verdant chambers, older powers whisper secrets that Zenith's Light cannot fully silence—memories of times when gods walked differently among mortals, when the balance between light and shadow held meaning beyond absolute dominion. Beneath the woods, reached by a hidden path and a jagged fissure in the earth, lies the ruined temple where the Forsaken take refuge. West of Rivenglade the road runs toward the remote village of Blackwater Falls, on the fringes of the Godscarred Wastes.

Beastborn Hunting Grounds

Dangerous territories where corrupted creatures from the Godscarred Wastes sometimes venture, making forest work perilous for the unwary. In these deep woods a Virelith stalked the night that Mira Roehart fled the Hall.

The Hidden Path

A hidden path through the woods above the town, curtained by moss-heavy vines, ends at a fissure that descends into the underground sanctuary where the Forsaken who resist Zenith's influence take refuge, far from the watchful eyes of divine authority.
